Why is GHS Necessary and Important?

Workplace safety is obviously extremely important, but there are SO MANY different safety programs out there that cover just about every topic imaginable. How does one choose which to implement? GHS seems like an excellent option, and one that should be used, but is it really necessary? What makes it so much better or more important than others that are out there? Are there other programs or strategies that cover the same general subject of chemical safety and marking?
